Haitian immigrants face a watery grave

A boat carrying Haitian immigrants has capsized, and killed, 17 people. This is leading many to question the ethics of a lack of easy emigration from war torn/impoverished nations, and what makes one human more entitled to a good life than another.

Haitians have suffered in recent years, from natural disasters to a surge in gang violence. The boat was headed to the United States. Due to how difficult immigration is from Haiti, many pay human traffickers, a trade which many say could be easily eradicated by simply allowing refugees into the country.

“My people deserve to be treated fairly, and with respect; we are human.” – a Haitian Australian resident.

Many have called for reforms as countless deaths occur from Haitians looking for a better life, however new legislation is unlikely.
